- Name
- Money Laundering
- Definition
- Money Laundering is the process via which money obtained illegally, i.e. "dirty money", has its origin obscured so that it can enter the mainstream and appearing to be "clean" money. All the other crimes in the taxonomy will have some kind of relationship with Money Laundering as the possessors of illegal money will need some means of making it appear legitimate to escape legal scrutiny. So for instance as a very simplistic example - if I have robbed a bank I will need some provable way of explaining my sudden increase in wealth to escape suspicion. Also money that is not necessarily obtained illegally might be laundered to avoid taxation - which is another crime.
